What's in a technical SEO audit

  • 01

    Indexing review

What Google indexed, what it skipped, why.

  • 02

    Crawl and render check

A full crawl, plus a JavaScript render check.

  • 03

    Speed and Core Web Vitals

Real-user LCP, INP and CLS on mobile, template by template.

  • 04

    Duplicates and canonicals

Parameter URLs and canonical tags pointing Google at the wrong version.

  • 05

    Redirects and broken links

Chains, loops, wrong redirect types and dead links.

  • 06

    Structured data

Schema checked for errors and missed rich results.

Signs of a technical SEO problem

Good pages missing from Google, an overnight traffic drop with no content change, and mobile speed scores in the red often trace back to crawl, index or speed problems. More content won't fix any of them, so we look under the hood before anything else.

  • Pages missing from Google. Search Console's Pages report lists them as "Crawled, currently not indexed" or "Discovered, currently not indexed."
  • A sudden traffic drop. It often follows a redesign, a platform move or a risky plugin update.
  • The wrong page ranks. A filtered or parameter URL shows up in results where your service page should be.
  • Slow mobile scores. Google indexes and ranks the mobile version of your site, so a sluggish phone experience is the one that counts.

Some unindexed URLs are normal, though. Google's own help says not to expect every URL to be indexed, so we flag only the pages that should rank.

What the audit checks: our 10-point Crawl Check

Every audit runs these ten checks in order. You can run a quick version yourself with free Google Search Console and a crawler like Screaming Frog, free for up to 500 URLs.

  1. Does robots.txt block anything that should rank?
  2. Do key pages carry a stray noindex tag?
  3. Are important URLs marked not indexed in Search Console?
  4. Do canonical tags point at the right page?
  5. Are there redirect chains with more than one hop?
  6. Do any internal links point to 404 pages?
  7. Do key templates pass Core Web Vitals on mobile field data?
  8. Does JavaScript content appear in Google's rendered HTML?
  9. Does the XML sitemap list only live, indexable URLs?
  10. Does structured data validate in Google's Rich Results Test?

If you can't answer three or more with confidence, a full audit is worth it, because it also explains why each problem happens.

Where we look first

We start where traffic leaks fastest: unindexed pages, templates failing Core Web Vitals, and duplicate URLs splitting rankings. A single bad template can drag down hundreds of pages, so we fix by template before we fix by page, and every finding names the template it lives on.

Indexing gaps come first, because an unindexed page can't rank. We compare your sitemap, crawl and Search Console to find the money pages that are missing.

Core Web Vitals come next. Google's page experience guidance says good scores don't guarantee top rankings, and it still shows the most relevant page even when experience is weak. So we treat speed as a tiebreaker worth winning, and we don't oversell it.

Crawl budget gets attention only when it matters. Google wrote its crawl budget guide for very large or fast-changing sites. On a 300-page service site it isn't the problem, and we'll tell you so.

Sample deliverable: your fix list

You get a prioritized fix list your team can work straight from, plus a ticket for each item written in plain developer language, with every affected URL attached. Every row names the issue, how many pages it touches, its likely traffic impact and the effort to fix, so the quick wins stand out. After your team ships, we re-crawl the affected URLs and mark each row done, so the list doubles as a progress tracker.

Sample data for illustration.

Each ticket covers the URL pattern, the fix, test steps and how we'll confirm in Search Console that Google saw the change. Tickets drop into Jira, Asana, Trello or a shared sheet, whichever tool your developers already use.

Is this right for you?

Right for you if

  • Traffic dropped while your content stayed the same.
  • A redesign or domain move is coming.
  • Good pages show as not indexed.
  • Someone can approve fixes.

Not the right fit if

  • Your 20-page site ranks fine. A free crawl will do.
  • Your real gap is thin content or no links.
  • Nobody can touch the site for months.
  • You want a ranking guarantee.

Questions, answered.

Ask us directly
How much does an SEO audit cost?

It depends on site size and depth. A health check on a small brochure site is a quick job, while a hand-checked audit of a large store in the middle of a migration takes weeks. Before you buy, ask what gets checked by hand and whether developer tickets are included.

What is a technical audit in SEO?

A technical SEO audit checks whether search engines can crawl, render and index your site, and whether pages load fast on mobile. It reviews robots rules, canonicals, redirects, schema and Core Web Vitals, then ranks every fix by traffic impact.

Can ChatGPT do an SEO audit?

ChatGPT can explain findings and suggest fixes. On its own, it can't crawl your site, read your Search Console data or measure real-user speed. Use it to understand issues, and use a crawler plus a human reviewer to find them.

What is the best technical SEO audit tool?

No single tool covers it all. Search Console shows what's indexed, PageSpeed Insights shows real-user speed, and a crawler such as Screaming Frog maps every URL. A good audit combines all three with human judgment about which fixes matter most.

How long does a technical SEO audit take?

Most audits take one to three weeks, depending on how many URLs and templates the site has. Large stores and migrations sit at the long end. We share the biggest findings early, so urgent fixes can start before the final report.

Do you fix the issues or only report them?

Both. Your developers can work straight from our tickets, or our team can ship the fixes on your CMS for you. Either way, once the fixes are live, we check Search Console to confirm that Google picked up each change.
