AI brand monitoring.

Our AI brand monitoring tracks what ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI answers say about your business every month. We run a fixed set of buyer prompts many times, record how often you're named, what's said and which rivals appear, then flag anything wrong or slipping.

About 1 in 1,000

runs of the same prompt gave two AI brand lists in the same order.

Why AI answers need monthly monitoring

AI answers need monthly monitoring because they change constantly: models update, sources get refreshed and one prompt gives different lists from run to run. A brand named in March can vanish in April with nothing changed on its own site.

SparkToro's tests across ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI found under a 1 in 100 chance of the same brand list coming back. So we treat one answer as a sample and report your share across many runs.

Three things tend to move that share:

  • Model and feature updates. Google merged AI Overviews and AI Mode into one experience in 2026, which can reshuffle sources.
  • New content from rivals. A competitor publishes a comparison page and starts showing up where you did.
  • Stale facts. An old directory listing gets cited, and outdated prices spread.

Monthly checks catch these early, while a single page update or listing fix can still put things right.

How our monitoring works: the Funnel Watch

We group every tracked prompt by buying stage, a setup we call the Funnel Watch. Tracking by stage shows where you drop out, since a brand can do well on "what is" questions and vanish when buyers ask for a shortlist.

StageExample promptWhat we watch for
Learn"how does a heat pump work in cold climates"Whether your guides get cited
Compare"best heat pump installers in Minneapolis"Whether you make the list
Decide"[your brand] reviews"Accuracy, tone and sources

Each prompt runs several times on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI results, in fresh sessions. We log every answer, brand and cited link in one place. You approve the prompts, and we revisit them every quarter as your services change.

Accuracy issues can be flagged between reports. If ChatGPT starts listing a product you discontinued, we can tell you before the next report, along with the source it's likely pulling from.

Tools vs a managed monitoring service

AI visibility tools collect the data, and a managed service turns it into decisions about what to fix. A tool alone can be enough, and a managed service fits when nobody in-house has time to read hundreds of answers a month.

ToolWhat it tracksWorth knowing
Semrush AI Visibility ToolkitAI Mode, ChatGPT and moreFits teams already on Semrush
Ahrefs Brand RadarSeven AI tools, including AI OverviewsLarge prompt index plus custom prompts
OtterlySeven AI tools, including ChatGPTLists plans from $29 a month
Peec AIChatGPT, Perplexity, GeminiVisibility, sentiment, sources
ProfoundEight AI tools, including GrokBuilt for larger brands

We use tools like these alongside our own repeated prompt runs. Our fee covers the reading and follow-through, from spotting why a mention dropped to tracing the source and fixing it.

Social listening tools such as Brandwatch track what people post about you. AI brand monitoring covers what AI tools say.

Sample monthly AI monitoring report

Each report opens with your mention share on each AI tool against last month, then lists what changed and why. Under that summary sits the full answer log, with every prompt, response and cited link, so you can check any number yourself.

Prompt stageToolYour shareLast monthTop rival shareFlag
CompareChatGPT30%20%60%None
ComparePerplexity40%40%50%None
CompareGemini10%30%70%Drop: new rival guide cited
DecideChatGPT90%90%n/aOld price quoted
LearnAI Overviews25%15%35%None

Sample data for illustration.

Every flag comes with a cause and a next step. The Gemini drop above would come with the rival page now being cited in your place and a plan to answer that same question better. The old price would come with the listing that carries it and the fix. After three reports, you can see which fixes moved your share.

What is AI brand monitoring?

AI brand monitoring is regular tracking of what ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews say about your business. It measures how often you're named, how accurately you're described, which rivals appear beside you and which sources those tools cite.

How do I track mentions in ChatGPT?

Pick 20 to 50 prompts your buyers would ask, run each several times in fresh sessions, and record if you're named and which links ChatGPT cites. Repeat monthly. Tools such as Ahrefs Brand Radar, Otterly or Peec AI can automate the runs and logging.

What are the best AI monitoring tools?

It depends on your stack and budget. Semrush and Ahrefs suit teams already using them for SEO. Otterly and Peec AI are dedicated trackers, and Profound targets larger brands. Pick one that lets you set your own prompts and repeat runs.

Is AI brand monitoring the same as social listening?

No. Social listening tools such as Brandwatch track what people post about you on social media and forums. AI brand monitoring tracks what AI tools say when someone asks a question. Both matter, and forum posts can feed AI answers, but they measure different things.

Which AI tool is best for branding?

To check how your brand comes across, test ChatGPT and Gemini first. Pew found 44% of US adults use ChatGPT and about a quarter use Gemini. Add Perplexity, then compare how each one describes you before deciding where to focus.

How often do AI answers about a brand change?

Constantly. SparkToro found the same prompt rarely returns the same brand list twice, and answers shift as models update and new pages get published. Monthly tracking across many runs gives a far clearer picture than occasional spot checks by hand.
