Why most content earns nothing
Most published pages get no search visits at all, and the reasons behind that repeat from site to site. Ahrefs studied why so few pages get any Google traffic and named three common causes: no search demand for the topic, no backlinks and a mismatch with search intent.
AI has made sameness worse. Drafting is now cheap, so the web fills up with pages that say the same things in the same order. Teams feel it too. Among marketers using AI for content in CMI's latest survey, 12% report a fall in content quality.
Google has been pushing back. Its March 2024 core update came with new spam policies, and Google later reported 45% less low-quality, unoriginal content in results. Its scaled content policy covers pages produced to boost rankings "whether automation, humans or a combination are involved."
Pages that earn traffic tend to have a reason to exist, someone credible behind them and something a reader can't get from the result above. Our checklist below turns that bar into five tests.
The PROOF standard
PROOF is the five-part check every piece of content passes at UppearNow before it goes live: Purpose, Real expertise, Original value, Obvious answers and Footnotes. Each letter covers one test from Google's guidance or buyer research. A piece that fails any letter goes back for work.
- Purpose. One reader, one search, one job. We confirm real people search the topic and decide what the page should lead them to do next.
- Real expertise. Someone with hands-on experience shapes the content, usually through a short interview. Google's guidance asks whether content shows "first-hand expertise and a depth of knowledge."
- Original value. Each piece adds what others lack: your data, a worked example, a price range or an opinion your team will stand behind.
- Obvious answers. The answer comes first, in plain words, under every heading. Readers skim, and AI tools lift short passages.
- Footnotes. Every figure points back to its original study or document. In the GEO study of AI answer engines, the best methods, led by adding statistics and quotations, beat the unedited baseline by 41% on one visibility measure.

Get my gap reviewWho writes your content
Each piece passes through three sets of hands: a writer matched to your field, a separate editor, and your own expert, who supplies what only your business knows. Every piece follows the same five steps, whether you order two a month or twenty.
- Brief. Search intent, questions, sources and the expert to interview.
- Interview. Your expert talks the topic through on a recorded call.
- Draft. The writer turns brief and interview into the piece.
- Edit. An editor checks facts, links, tone and every PROOF point.
- Publish and track. On-page setup, then results logged from day one.

How we measure content
We measure content by what it does for your business: leads, sales and pipeline first, then the search signals that predict them. Each month you get a report showing every published piece, its Search Console clicks and impressions, the conversions GA4 credits to it and, where tracking allows, whether AI tools cite it.
| Piece | Type | Clicks (28 days) | Leads | Cited in AI answers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| /guides/payroll-software-cost/ | Pricing guide | 1,240 | 31 | Yes, AI Overviews |
| /compare/gusto-vs-adp/ | Comparison | 860 | 18 | Yes, ChatGPT |
| /blog/payroll-mistakes/ | Explainer | 2,110 | 6 | No |
Sample data for illustration.
The report also flags content that gets traffic and few leads, like the explainer above. That page might need a stronger next step, or it may serve an earlier buying stage. We judge each piece by the job its brief gave it, so a problem-stage guide isn't held to a pricing page's lead count. Pieces that slip get queued for a refresh, and the report names what we'll change and when.
What content marketing costs
Content marketing is usually billed as a monthly retainer, with strategy and large builds quoted as separate projects. Your price depends on how many pieces you need each month, how deep the research goes and how much expert input each one takes.

Questions, answered.
Ask us directlyWhat are content marketing services?
Content marketing services are the planning, writing, editing and improving of content that attracts and converts customers. They usually cover strategy, SEO articles, service pages, refreshes and reporting. The aim is steady leads from Google and AI search, earned by answering what buyers ask before they buy.
What are the types of content marketing services?
The main types are content strategy, SEO content writing, AI-assisted writing, content refreshes and programmatic SEO. Many agencies also offer email newsletters, video scripts and social content. A sensible order is strategy and writing first, then refreshes once you have a library of older pages.
What are the benefits of content marketing?
Good content keeps working after it's published, bringing visits and leads month after month without paying for each click. It answers buyer questions before a sales call, builds trust and gives AI tools something credible to cite. Expect it to take time, with results usually building over several months.
How do I choose a content marketing agency?
Ask who writes your content and what they know about your field. Ask to see a sample brief, how they use AI and how they check facts. Then ask what they report: a good agency puts leads beside traffic and explains which pieces didn't work and why.
What is the 3-3-3 rule for marketing?
The 3-3-3 rule is an informal planning shortcut with no single official version. One common reading: focus on three core messages, three audiences and three channels. Another splits content into three types, such as educational, promotional and entertaining. Both aim to keep your effort focused on a few things done well.
How much do content marketing services cost?
Most agencies charge a monthly retainer tied to the number and depth of pieces, and quote strategy and large builds as projects. Expert interviews, original research and technical topics raise the price. A per-piece breakdown from each agency makes quotes far easier to compare fairly.
How long does content marketing take to work?
Expect early signs, such as pages indexed and impressions rising, within the first two or three months. Leads and steady traffic usually take six months or more. Refreshing pages that already rank often moves faster than new content, since those URLs already have history with Google.
What is the best content marketing agency?
The best agency for you knows your industry, writes with real experts, shows how it uses AI and reports on leads. Rankings on lists like Clutch are a starting point. A sample brief and a recent client report from each shortlisted agency will tell you far more.
