How Google picks AI Overview sources

Google draws AI Overview sources from indexed pages that can show a snippet, then pulls from results for several related searches at once. Its guide to AI features says there are "no additional requirements" and no special optimizations needed.

That second part is called query fan-out, which Google describes as issuing "multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources." Ask "best running shoes for flat feet" and the AI may also search arch support and stability shoes on its own. A page that answers those side questions well can be cited without ranking first.

Google's AI optimization guide, updated July 2026, also clears up three common beliefs:

  • Structured data isn't required, and there's "no special schema.org markup" for AI.
  • You don't need llms.txt files, since Google Search doesn't use them.
  • There's "no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces."

It does ask for "non-commodity content" with a unique point of view.

Winning clicks when AI answers first

You win clicks under an AI Overview by being the source it cites and by offering what a summary can't, such as a price quote, a calculator or a booking form. People after a quick fact may never click, so pages built around a next step hold up best.

Pew's study of 900 US adults' browsing shows the pressure: links inside a summary got a click on just 1% of visits, and 60% of searches starting with "who," "what," "when" or "why" brought up a summary.

Google points to the other side of the story. In its Q2 2026 earnings remarks, the company said it sends "billions of clicks to websites every week through AI features in Search."

Both are true. Fewer people click overall, and those who do may have read the summary first. So we report leads from Google beside traffic and focus on the queries with real buying intent.

Our AI Overview playbook: the Fan-Out Six

The Fan-Out Six is our six-step process for queries where AI Overviews show up, built on what Google's own documentation says about eligibility and fan-out. We start with the queries closest to revenue, where a citation is worth most, then roll winning patterns out to similar pages.

  1. Confirm eligibility. Clear stray noindex and nosnippet rules.
  2. Map the fan-out. List side questions for each main query.
  3. Answer up top. A direct answer under every heading.
  4. Add what others lack. First-hand data, real prices or photos.
  5. Sync your facts. Site, Business Profile and Merchant Center match.
  6. Measure and repeat. Track citations weekly, expand what works.

Sample AI Overview citation tracker

Our weekly tracker shows you, for each priority query, whether an AI Overview appeared, which domains it cited and whether you were one. Watching rival domains week over week shows who you're up against and which page needs work next.

The tracker sits beside Search Console's Generative AI performance report, which Google's guide recommends for measuring how pages perform in AI features, so both sit in one monthly view you can scan in minutes. When a citation drops, we check whether the page changed, a rival published something stronger or the AI Overview stopped showing for that query.

Ask us directly
How do I get into AI Overviews?

Start by making sure Google can index the page and show a snippet from it, since Google lists nothing extra. Then answer the main question and its side questions clearly, add first-hand detail and keep your facts consistent. Nobody can guarantee a citation.

Can you turn off AI Overviews on Google?

Searchers can't switch them off. Google's help page calls AI Overviews a core feature that "cannot be turned off," though the Web filter shows text links only. Site owners can limit what gets used with nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex rules.

Do AI Overviews reduce traffic?

Often, yes. Pew found people clicked a regular result on 8% of visits with an AI summary and 15% without. Ahrefs linked AI Overviews with lower click-through rates for top results. Google says AI features still send billions of clicks to sites each week.

What is AI Mode?

AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience, where you ask longer questions and follow up. Google said it passed 1 billion monthly users in 2026 and has merged it with AI Overviews into one experience. Both may use query fan-out to gather sources.

Are Google AI Overviews always correct?

No. Google's own help page says AI Overviews "can and will make mistakes." That's one reason to keep your prices, hours and services accurate everywhere. If an AI Overview states something wrong about you, the clearest fix is a page that states the right facts plainly.

Is Google getting rid of AI Overviews?

There's no sign of it. Google calls AI Overviews a core Search feature and has folded AI Mode into the same experience. Planning for AI answers on your key searches is the safer bet for the next few years of search.
