Risks of a pretty site that doesn't sell

A pretty site that doesn't sell leaves visitors unsure what you do, who it's for and what to do next, so they leave for a competitor's site. We guard against that with the Five Questions Test, which every wireframe passes before design starts.

  1. What do you do? "Emergency plumbing in Tampa" passes. A slogan over a stock photo fails.
  2. Is this for me? Name your customer, area or problem.
  3. Why should I trust you? Reviews, licenses and real job photos sit up top.
  4. What will it cost? A price, a starting price or the factors behind your quotes.
  5. What happens next? One button with a specific label, such as "Book a free estimate".

Nielsen Norman Group found visitors read 28% of a page's words at most, and nearer a fifth on a typical visit, so these answers belong in headlines, buttons and the first line under each heading.

Fast by design: our performance budget

We set a performance budget before the first mock-up: firm limits on image sizes, fonts and third-party scripts, each tied to one of Google's Core Web Vitals. Any idea that breaks the budget gets caught on the drawing board, where a change takes minutes.

Core Web VitalGoogle's "good" targetDesign choices that move it
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)Within 2.5 secondsHero image weight, web fonts, sliders
Interaction to Next Paint (INP)200 ms at mostChat widgets, pop-ups, heavy tag setups
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)0.1 at mostImages without set sizes, late banners

Targets come from web.dev, which advises measuring the 75th percentile of page loads. We test on a mid-range Android phone over a throttled connection. Google says Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems, though good scores alone won't lift a page to the top. Faster pages also keep more buyers, as Vodafone's sales lift shows.

Clear words convert better

Plain words convert better because visitors skim, and familiar words survive a skim. Copy at a 5th to 7th grade level beat 8th and 9th grade copy by 56% in Unbounce's study of over 41,000 landing pages, and difficult words showed a -24.3% correlation with conversion rate. So we write your copy first, fit the layouts to real words, and give every sales page a read-aloud pass. Jargon your customers wouldn't use gets cut, and so does any sentence a busy owner would have to read twice.

Redesigning an existing site

A redesign should keep the pages that already earn traffic. We crawl your current site, list every URL with search visits or backlinks, and map each to its new home with a 301 redirect, which Google says doesn't cause a loss in PageRank. Google also expects some ranking movement during the move, and advises keeping redirects for at least a year.

What affects design cost and timeline

Three things move a design budget most: how many unique page layouts you need, who writes the copy, and which tools the site connects to. Ten service pages sharing one layout cost far less to design than ten pages that each look different. Integrations add testing time too: a booking tool or CRM form has to work on every device before launch. Timing rests mostly on approvals and copy. Copy that's ready on day one keeps the schedule tight, and copy written mid-project pushes design back, since layouts are built around the words.

Website design pricing

Custom website design has no honest flat price until scope is known, because layouts, copy and booking or CRM features each add design and testing hours. The three factors below set your quote, and the packages show common starting points.

  • Brochure

    Custom quote
    • Agreed number of pages
    • Speed budget
  • Custom

    Custom quote
    • Brochure plus copywriting

Every plan starts with a free review, so your quote matches what your site actually needs.

Is this right for you?

Right for you if

  • Your site looks dated or confusing.
  • People search for the service you sell.
  • You can review drafts within days.
  • You want to edit the site yourself.

Not the right fit if

  • A template already does the job.
  • You need it live this week.
  • Your offer and pricing change weekly.
  • You need one campaign page only.

How it works, step by step.

  1. 01

    Map and write

Five visitor questions answered, copy drafted.

  2. 02

    Wireframe

    Grayscale layouts agreed per template.

  3. 03

    Design and build

Brand styling on a custom theme.

  4. 04

What's included in website design services?

Website design services cover planning, copy, layout, visual design and the build. Ours add a page plan built on the five questions visitors ask, plain-language copy, grayscale wireframes, a speed budget tied to Core Web Vitals, and testing on real phones.

How much does custom website design cost?

Price follows the number of unique layouts, who writes the copy, features like online booking, and links to tools such as your CRM. Reusing one layout across many service pages keeps design hours down. After a look at your site and goals, you get a written project price.

How long does it take to design a website?

Timing depends on page count, how fast feedback comes back and whether copy is ready. Planning, wireframes, design, build and testing run in order, and late copy holds up design. You get dates for each stage before work begins, so you can plan launch.

Can I update the website myself?

Yes. Sites we build on WordPress, Shopify or Webflow use that platform's own editor, so you can change text, swap images, add posts and update prices without code. New layouts and features are where a developer still helps, and we can take those on.

Is a website template good enough for a small business?

Sometimes, yes. A good template suits a business with simple needs, a tight budget and a standard offer. Custom design pays off when you need specific layouts, tighter speed control, booking features, or a look that sets you apart locally.

Do I need a full redesign or a refresh?

A refresh fits when the structure works and visitors convert, but the look feels dated. A full redesign fits when visitors can't find answers, pages load slowly, or the site can't support new services. Our free review tells you which.
