What GEO is and why it matters now

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your business named, described correctly and cited as a source when AI tools answer questions. It builds on SEO, then adds what AI answers reward: clear facts, quotable pages and a reputation other sites confirm.

It matters now because far more buyers start with AI. Google says AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users within a year of its global launch, and the Gemini app reached 950 million. Pew's 2026 survey found 44% of US adults use ChatGPT, up from 34% a year earlier.

Clicks are thinning at the same time. In Pew's 2025 browsing study, people clicked a link inside Google's AI summary on just 1% of visits. When an AI answer gives a buyer three names, those three become the shortlist.

Google is plain about what it needs. Its guidance on AI features asks only that a page be indexed and able to appear with a snippet, with "no additional requirements." GEO is doing those basics well, then making sure every other source agrees about you.

Test it yourself: five buyer prompts to try

You can see where you stand in about fifteen minutes by running five buyer prompts in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Use a logged-out window, fill in your details and note who gets named and which links appear, running each prompt twice since answers change.

  1. "What are the best [your service] companies in [your city or market]?" Count how many rivals appear before you, if you appear at all.
  2. "[Your brand] vs [top rival]: which is better for [buyer type]?" Note which source each tool leans on.
  3. "How much does [your service] cost?" See whose pricing page sets the expectation.
  4. "Is [your brand] legit?" This shows which reviews the tools find.
  5. "Who would you recommend for [specific problem you solve]?" The closest to how buyers really ask.

If you're missing from prompts 1 and 5, or prompt 3 cites someone else's prices, those are the gaps GEO work closes first.

How we work: the CITE method

Every engagement runs on the CITE method, four checks that decide whether an AI tool can find, trust and quote your business. We score you on each one against your top rivals, then fix the weakest first, since one weak check can keep you out.

  • C, Crawlable. Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot can reach key pages, indexed with snippets allowed.
  • I, Identifiable. Name, address and services match across your site, schema and profiles.
  • T, Trusted. Reviews, press and forum threads mention you on sites AI already cites.
  • E, Extractable. Each key answer, price or spec sits in plain text right under its heading.

Sample monthly AI visibility report

Each month you get one report showing your share of AI answers, the sources being cited and how you compare with your main rivals, across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI results. Every number comes from repeated runs of the same approved prompts, so a monthly change is less likely to be chance.

Under the summary sit three short sections. What moved names the pages or mentions behind each change. What's wrong lists any incorrect facts, with the source each tool likely pulled them from. What's next sets the fixes for the coming month. Google's AI optimization guide recommends the Generative AI performance report in Search Console, so those numbers appear beside ours, along with leads from AI referrals in GA4.

What generative engine optimization services cost

Our generative engine optimization services are billed as a monthly retainer, and a plan can open with a one-off audit. Three things set your price: the prompts and AI tools we track, the pages that need rework and the outreach your category demands, which is heaviest in crowded national markets.

Is this right for you?

Right for you if

  • Your buyers ask ChatGPT or Gemini for options in your category.
  • Rivals show up in AI answers more than you do.
  • Your site is indexed and has some reviews already.
  • You want AI visibility reported beside leads and sales.

Not the right fit if

  • AI tools play no part in how your buyers choose. Classic SEO pays off sooner.
  • Google can't index your site yet. Fix that before GEO.
  • You want a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT answers.
  • You need leads within days. Paid search moves faster.

Your first 90 days.

  1. Days 1 to 7

Prompt set approved, CITE audit run and a baseline across four AI tools.

  2. Days 8 to 30

Crawler, schema and fact fixes live, with remaining work ordered by likely effect.

  3. Days 31 to 60

Key pages rebuilt around direct answers, profiles cleaned up, outreach started.

  4. Days 61 to 90

Three-month report, winning patterns extended and next quarter planned.

What are GEO services?

GEO services help your business appear in answers from AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. The work covers crawler access, consistent business facts, quotable pages and earned mentions on trusted sites, plus monthly tracking of how often AI answers name and cite you.

Is GEO different from SEO?

GEO builds on SEO. Both need crawlable, indexed pages and real authority. SEO targets rankings and clicks in the blue links. GEO targets mentions and citations inside AI answers, and it leans harder on consistent facts and on what other sites say about you.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No, it builds on it. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode pull their sources from its search index, and ChatGPT search reads the live web. Rankings remain the base in 2026. What's new is that clear, quotable, well-cited pages now tend to earn the ranking and the AI mention together.

What is the best agency for generative engine optimization?

The best fit is an agency that shows its method, runs prompts more than once, links official sources and refuses to promise placements. Ask how they measure share of AI answers, which tools they test and what they'd fix first. Be wary of anyone guaranteeing ChatGPT rankings.

How much does it cost to hire someone for GEO?

We bill GEO monthly, and some plans open with a one-off audit. Price depends on how many prompts and AI tools are tracked, how much content needs rework and how much outreach your market needs. Before comparing quotes, get each scope in writing with prompts, pages and deliverables listed.

How do I start with GEO as a beginner?

Run five buyer prompts in ChatGPT and Perplexity and note who gets named. Then check that your robots.txt doesn't block OAI-SearchBot, make your business facts match across your site and profiles, and put a plain answer at the top of your key pages.

Can you guarantee placement in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?

No one can. Google, OpenAI and Perplexity decide what their AI tools say, and answers vary from one run to the next. What you get from us is a written plan, monthly work you can see and reports showing your share of answers, what moved and what we'll test next.
