Signs you're losing local customers
Every time a rival shows up in the map pack and you don't, a ready-to-buy customer goes down the street. Stalled reviews and the wrong opening hours, phone numbers or addresses on Google do the same damage, often without you ever knowing that anyone nearby searched for you at all.
- Missing from the map pack. You rank in Maps when you search from your own office, but not two miles away.
- Few or old reviews. A competitor with 180 recent reviews looks safer than you with 22 from 2023.
- Wrong details online. An old address on Yelp or Apple Maps sends people, and Google, mixed signals.
- Calls but no growth. Calls hold steady, but new neighborhoods across town stay silent.
AI tools now read the same signals. When someone asks ChatGPT for "the best dentist near me," it leans on the reviews, listings and local press that Google also reads.
How Google ranks local businesses
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and it states plainly that there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Distance is fixed, since you can't move your shop closer to every searcher. Relevance and prominence are where local SEO does its work, so that's where we spend our time.
Our method is called NEAR:
- Nail the profile. Primary category, secondary categories, services and attributes chosen for how customers search, then kept fresh with posts and photos.
- Earn reviews. A steady flow of real reviews, with a reply to each one. Google's own help says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking.
- Align listings. The same name, address and phone everywhere, so Google and AI tools trust what they find.
- Root it locally. Location pages, local links and local press coverage that prove you're part of the area.

Check my map rankReviews, rules and the mistakes we fix
Reviews feed prominence, so they get extra care and a clear process. The FTC's 2024 rule on fake reviews bans fake and AI-generated reviews, paying for reviews that express a set opinion, and pressuring people to remove bad ones. Our review program asks every real customer at the right moment, with no rewards of any kind, which Google's review policies prohibit.
| Setup | What we focus on |
|---|---|
| Single location | A complete profile, steady reviews, strong service pages |
| Service-area business | Service areas set correctly, city pages with real job examples |
| Multi-location brand | One verified profile per location, a shared page template, bulk listing updates |
The six mistakes we fix most often:
- Keywords stuffed into the business name, which Google says can get a profile suspended
- The wrong primary category
- Mismatched addresses across directories
- Duplicate profiles for one location
- Unanswered reviews
- A homepage with no city or service area in the text
What we report each month
Each month you get a map grid: a picture of your service area with your ranking shown at dozens of points, so you can see exactly where you win and where a rival takes over. Next to it sits review growth, calls, direction requests and website clicks from your Business Profile.
| Metric | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Map pack rank across your service area | Grid rank tracking |
| New reviews and average rating | Google Business Profile |
| Calls, directions and website clicks | Business Profile performance |
| Leads from local pages | GA4 |
We compare each month's grid with the one before. The grid shows where you gain or lose ground, block by block, month over month. For multi-location brands, each location gets its own grid, so you can spot the branch that needs help. Every report ends with three named actions for next month, such as a category change or a review push at one branch.
Local SEO pricing
Your location count and how crowded your market is set the monthly fee. One shop in a small town needs a light touch, while a 20-location brand in Chicago needs a plan for every branch.

Questions, answered.
Ask us directlyHow much does local SEO cost?
Local SEO is usually a monthly fee that scales with your number of locations and how competitive your market is. Expect the first months to cost a little more, since profile cleanup and new location pages happen up front, before steady monthly work.
Can I pay Google to rank higher in Maps?
No. Google states there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads can appear above the map pack, but organic map results are earned through relevance, distance and prominence, which come from your profile, reviews, listings and reputation.
Do reviews help local SEO?
Yes. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking, and 97% of consumers read reviews before choosing a local business, per BrightLocal. Steady, recent reviews with replies help both your rankings and the decision to call.
Is doing local SEO worth it?
For most businesses that serve a set area, yes. Local searchers are often ready to buy, call or visit right away. Small map pack gains bring more calls and visits, and the work compounds as reviews and local links build up.
How long does local SEO take?
Profile fixes can change your map results within weeks. Review growth, listing cleanup and local links usually show steady gains over three to six months. Crowded markets, such as legal or home services in big cities, take longer to crack.
Does local SEO help with ChatGPT recommendations?
Yes. AI assistants build local answers from the same reviews, listings and local articles that Google reads. BrightLocal found 45% of consumers now use AI tools for local recommendations, so a strong profile and consistent listings help in both places.
